Taking the chlorine out of Albuquerque showers
Every tap in the house, not just the kitchen: carbon filtration built for the chlorinated water ABCWUA delivers.
Why chlorine is the filtration story here
Picture a hot shower in a closed-up University-area bathroom in January. The steam carries a faint swimming-pool smell, and it lingers on your hair afterward. That's chlorine, and in Albuquerque it's there on purpose.
The Water Authority disinfects with chlorine, which it makes on-site as sodium hypochlorite, to keep water safe as it travels from the surface water plant and the city's wells through miles of pipe. Some utilities elsewhere use chloramine instead, but ABCWUA uses chlorine. That's helpful for you, because ordinary chlorine is something catalytic carbon handles very well.
Residual levels at your tap can vary with how far you sit from where the water entered the system, and with the surface-versus-groundwater blend the utility is running that season. Homes at the far edges of the Northwest Mesa and the upper Foothills may notice it differently from houses near Downtown, so we measure rather than guess.
What carbon won't do
Catalytic carbon reduces chlorine taste and odor, sediment and many VOCs. Hardness, arsenic and nitrate pass straight through it. That's why we put it in the same tank as a softener, and why drinking-water concerns are better handled by reverse osmosis.
Filtration alone vs. the combined tank
Because Albuquerque water commonly tests hard as well, filtering without softening leaves half the problem in place. Here's how the two most common choices compare for a city home.

Where it goes in your kind of house
- Westside tract homes
- Typically on the garage wall beside the water heater, where the main line comes in. Clean, quick and easy to service.
- NE Heights ranch homes
- Often the garage too, sometimes an exterior utility closet. We confirm drain and power access during the test.
- Nob Hill & older central homes
- Closets and laundry nooks are tight, so the single-tank design helps: one footprint instead of two.
- Valley properties on wells
- After the pressure tank. Wells may call for specialty media for iron, manganese or sulfur, chosen only after testing.
What the free test looks at
During the 15-minute in-home water test we read free chlorine at your tap alongside hardness, TDS, pH, iron and manganese, and sulfur. You see each number as it comes up, and you keep the printed report.
For regulated contaminant results, ABCWUA's annual Consumer Confidence Report is the official source. Our general whole-home filtration page covers the media in more depth, and our Albuquerque overview explains the city's blended supply.
Filtration FAQs for Albuquerque
Does Albuquerque water have chloramine I need special media for?
No. ABCWUA uses chlorine, not chloramine, so standard catalytic carbon is the right fit for city homes.
Can I just use a pitcher filter instead?
A pitcher helps one glass at a time. It won't touch the chlorine in your shower, washing machine or bath, which is where many people notice it most in Albuquerque's dry winters.
Will whole-home carbon fix my hard water?
No. Carbon and softening resin do different jobs. Our Soft + Filtered Home package combines both in one tank so you get each benefit without a second unit.
How long does installation take in an older home?
Most installs, including those in older central neighborhoods, take about half a day. If space is tight, we plan the location with you during the test.
