Water softeners · Los Lunas

Softer water for Los Lunas homes, from the new subdivisions to the old valley lots

Los Lunas draws its water from deep in the Albuquerque Basin, and basin groundwater commonly tests hard. A properly sized softener stops that hardness at the main line, before it ever reaches your heater or your shower.

  • 48,000-grain softener with a digital metered valve
  • Installed by our own crew in about half a day
  • Free installation and a lifetime warranty

What hard water does to a Los Lunas house

The village treats its wells for arsenic, but calcium and magnesium aren't regulated, so they arrive at your tap just as they left the aquifer.

Tankless heaters that need descaling

Plenty of newer Los Lunas builds come with tankless units. Scale collects inside the heat exchanger and drags down efficiency.

Chalky shower glass

Mineral spots dry fast in our low humidity and bake onto glass doors and chrome trim.

Tight, itchy skin

Dry high-desert air plus hard water is a rough combination. Soft water rinses clean and leaves less residue behind.

Water softener installed in a garage next to the water heater

How we install a softener here

On village water, the softener almost always lands in the garage, where the main line enters near the water heater. Newer Los Lunas tract homes usually have a softener loop roughed in; when one is missing, we'll show you exactly what extra plumbing it takes and quote it upfront.

On a private well outside village limits, the tank goes after the pressure tank so it sees steady, pressurized flow. Wells can also carry iron, which a softener can handle in small amounts, so we check for it during the test.

Either way, we set the drain line to code, program the metered valve for your household, and leave a bypass so you can isolate the system anytime.

What the free test measures in Los Lunas

Your results tell us how to size and program the valve. We check:

HardnessSets the resin capacity and how often the valve regenerates
Iron & manganeseMostly relevant on private wells; small amounts can ride through a softener
TDSA general read on dissolved minerals and a baseline for drinking water
pHHelps spot water that's aggressive toward plumbing
ChlorineTells us whether adding carbon would improve taste and smell
SulfurFlags the rotten-egg odor some wells develop

A softener doesn't remove arsenic, nitrate, chlorine or bacteria. If you want to reduce arsenic or nitrate in drinking water, that's a job for reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink.

Our Soft Water Essentials package is $2,495 installed, and you can compare every option on the packages page or read more about how our water softeners work. For the bigger picture on local water, start at our Los Lunas overview.

Softener questions from Los Lunas homeowners

How hard is Los Lunas water?

Groundwater in the basin commonly tests hard, but the reading varies by well and by home. Your test results will show exactly where your water lands, and we size the softener from that number.

My new build has a loop in the garage. Is that enough?

Usually, yes. A pre-plumbed loop makes the install quicker. We'll confirm that it's routed to the right lines and that there's a drain and outlet nearby.

Can I put a softener on my well outside the village?

Yes. It goes after the pressure tank. We'll also recommend lab testing for bacteria, nitrate and arsenic, since a softener doesn't treat those.

Will soft water help with spots on my car and windows?

Rinsing with softened water leaves noticeably fewer mineral spots, which is welcome when water evaporates as quickly as it does here.
