Water softeners · Los Ranchos
Soft water for Los Ranchos homes, from Rio Grande Boulevard to the acequias
Valley water leaves its mark: chalky rings on the sink, cloudy wine glasses, a tankless heater that keeps flashing a service code. A properly sized softener stops the scale before it reaches any of it.
- 48,000-grain softener with a digital metered valve, installed for $2,495
- Sized from a hardness reading taken at your own tap
- Installed in about half a day by our own installers
Why hardness shows up on both kinds of Los Ranchos water
Whether your house is on ABCWUA service or pumps from its own well, the water has spent time in contact with valley sediments and aquifer minerals.
Utility customers
ABCWUA water blends treated river water with groundwater, and the share of groundwater climbs in dry years. Many village homes see mineral buildup as a result.
Well owners
An older valley well can carry its own mineral load, sometimes with a little iron. A softener handles hardness and small amounts of iron; it isn't a fix for anything else in the water.
Desert-dry skin
Low humidity already pulls moisture from skin and hair. Soft water rinses clean of soap film, which many people notice within the first week.
What we check before recommending a softener
The free on-site test measures hardness, TDS, pH, chlorine, iron and manganese, and sulfur. Hardness sets the softener size and the regeneration schedule. Iron tells us whether resin alone can cope or whether the water needs another stage first. Your test results will show exactly where your water lands — we don't guess from a ZIP code.
If the house runs on a private well, we'll also point you toward lab testing for bacteria, nitrate and arsenic. A softener removes none of those, and you deserve to know before spending money on equipment. If the lab finds something, reverse osmosis or another approach may belong in the plan.
How an install goes on a valley property
- 1
Find the main
On village water that's usually where the line enters the garage or a utility closet. On a well, the softener goes after the pressure tank, often in the well house or a garage.
- 2
Decide what stays hard
Barn hydrants, stock tanks and garden spigots rarely need soft water. Where the plumbing allows, we keep those lines on untreated water.
- 3
Plumb, program, test
We add a bypass, run the drain line, set the metered valve for your household and verify soft water at the tap before leaving.
Want chlorine taste handled too? The Soft + Filtered Home package puts softening and catalytic carbon in one tank for $3,450. Background on the technology lives on our main water softeners page, and the bigger picture for the village is on our Los Ranchos water page.
Softener FAQs for Los Ranchos
Does a softener make sense if my well water already tastes fine?
Taste and hardness are separate. Well water can taste great and still coat your water heater with scale. The hardness reading during your free test answers the question.
Can my horses drink softened water?
We usually recommend leaving barn and stock-tank lines on untreated water, which also saves salt and resin capacity for the house. We'll map out which lines get softened during the visit.
Will a softener remove arsenic or nitrate from my well?
No. Ion exchange softening targets calcium, magnesium and small amounts of iron. If lab testing turns up arsenic or nitrate, under-sink reverse osmosis is the usual point-of-use approach.
Is there room for a softener in an older home with no garage?
Usually. A utility room, well house or exterior enclosure can work as long as we can reach the main line, a drain and an outlet. We confirm placement before you commit.
